Some of these are only available to library staff, while others are open to all patrons.

Biodiversity Heritage Library



The Biodiversity Heritage Library is the result of the efforts of these natural history museum and research libraries to digitize over two million volumes of published literature held in their collections:

  • Harvard University Botany Libraries (Cambridge, MA)
  • Harvard University, Ernst Mayr Library of the Museum of Comparative Zoology (Cambridge, MA)
  • Marine Biological Laboratory / Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (Woods Hole, MA)
  • Missouri Botanical Garden (St. Louis, MO)
  • Natural History Museum (London, UK)
  • New York Botanical Garden (New York, NY)
  • Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (Richmond, UK)
  • Smithsonian Institution Libraries (Washington, DC)
  • University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana, IL)

As of today 30,808 volumes have been scanned, dating from the year 1480 to 2006. Subjects currently with strong representation in include:

Knovel e-books: Acrobat 9.0 bug



Update 2/17/09: Knovel believes they have fixed the problem described below.

If you use Adobe Acrobat Reader 9.0 (the latest version), you may currently experience difficulties accessing PDF documents in the Knovel e-book database.


Knovel is working on the issue, but they do not have a time estimate for fixing this bug.

Links to Google Books added to MadCat library catalog


UW-Madison libraries have added 1000's of links from the MadCat library catalog to online versions in Google Books and the Big 10's shared digital repository, HathiTrust.

If an item we have in MadCat has been digitized by Google, the MadCat record will include the link: View available text online.

If a cover image is available, it will be shown in the MadCat record with the link: More Information At Google Books - whether or not the text is searchable or can be read online.
